His father, who is a professional football coach and manager, moved the family to Spain when he was just six years old. He started his career playing for Real Madrid Castilla before moving to Internacional de Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Enrique began his international career with the Brazilian team Internacional de Porto Alegre. He made his debut for the national team during the 2004 FIFA World Cup qualification tournament. His performances caught the attention of several European clubs, including Manchester United, FC Barcelona, and AC Milan.

In 2006, Enrique joined Manchester United. He spent three seasons at the club, where he won numerous awards, including the UEFA Champions League and Premier League titles. In 2009, he signed a new contract with Manchester United until 2011, but the deal was later terminated due to financial difficulties at the club.
